This PDF Book was prepared by musicologist, Roger L. Hall, and includes a detailed
Billings family genealogy,
plus the Facts and Fiction about Billings and The Stoughton Musical Society,
America's
oldest existing choral society, organized on November 7, 1786. The first music book they sang from was "The
Continental Harmony" by William Billings. The most popular early Billings tune sung by the Stoughton Musical
Society was "MAJESTY" and "CHESTER" was a close second.

This wordless tune, STOUGHTON was published in the first Billings music collection published in Boston,
The New-England Psalm Singer. The tune was edited by Roger Hall with an 18th century text
and the new version was
recorded in its
Premiere Performance by the Old Stoughton Musical Society Chorus in their Bicentennial Concert
held in Stoughton on November 7, 1986.
